How toThat luxury holiday feeling, at home
There’s nothing better than a long, luxurious holiday where you can relax and recharge in gorgeous surroundings. The only hard part is coming home.
But what if you could bring that luxury holiday feel home with you? With the right architectural and styling approach, you can: it’s called ‘modern resort’, and it’s perfectly captured in Bec and George Douros’ (of Nectaar and The Block fame) stunning home, Project Alma.
In this piece, we’ll look at how you can nail the modern resort style in your own project and learn how small upgrades to standard-range doors can make a massive impact.
First things first, let’s take a tour of Bec and George’s place:
Hitting the hallmarks of modern resort style
The modern resort style of home and interior design is a blend of contemporary aesthetics with the relaxed glamour of a luxury resort. It’s all about the perfect balance of comfort and elegance: high end style with laid back vibes. Bec elaborates:
Our dream home was inspired by a lot of our overseas travel and being on holiday. I wanted to invoke the same feeling that we felt when we were travelling as a family.

So, how do you bring that perfect holiday feel into the family home? For Bec and George, the modern resort style is achieved with the following techniques.
1. Open and spacious layouts
Think high ceilings and airy rooms that maximise space and natural light. For Bec, ‘full height’ or ceiling size Flush doors play a key role in contributing to this aspect of the home: “The full height doors are a beautiful architectural feature themselves, and a great way to lead you through to the gorgeous double height void in the main living space.” The pivot solution entrance door adds a sense of opulent grandeur too.
2. Contrasting organic materials with high-end touches
Materials like polished wood, stone, and marble help to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while contributing to a sense of indoor-outdoor connection. Bec and George chose a Solid Core Flush door—in some situations, Standard Honeycomb Core doors can experience ‘show through’. This happens when the honeycomb pattern on the internal component of the door is visible from certain angles, particularly when using glossier paint finishes.
Choosing a Solid Core internal component ensures no potential for show-through, with a smooth primed finish for painting and a surface that’s perfect for contrasting with textured brick and marble. “We went with the Solid Core door because it gives us a really beautiful, minimal seamless painted finish.”
3. Clean lines and minimalist décor
The modern resort style is tastefully uncluttered—after all, when you’re on holiday, things should be easy and breezy. As a result, it’s important to avoid extensive ornamental features and keep things visually clean and simple where you can.
“We wanted the architectural details of the doors to be a feature, so we went full height and eliminated the architraves. We also went for concealed hinges.”
