Bringing Hollywood down under: Achieving the Palms Springs style

10.04.25

The Palm Springs style continues to grow in popularity thanks to its timeless design aesthetic as well as the freedom it offers to explore and experiment.

Known for their Hamptons-style homes, the team at Wattle Court has recently embraced a new challenge: finding a home for the bold themes of this mid-century architectural style amongst the mottled gums and sun-drenched sands of Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

From splashbacks to balustrades, there’s plenty to love here. But in our humble opinion, the team’s choice of our doors does so much to shape the unique character of the space.

Making a grand statement with a grand entrance

The team selected from our Elements Collection to make a striking visual statement, and this immediately sets the tone for what lies inside. Crafted from sustainable timber and finished with a natural White Oak veneer, the door is complemented by the ELEM H1B Round timber pad handle

These natural materials help settle the home amongst its coastal surrounds, and when offset with classic mid-century bricks, the entrance becomes the first hint of the home’s Palm Springs inspiration.

The home’s two levels are seamlessly connected through the symmetrical use of vertical panelling and horizontal brickwork. With an oversized window on the second level mirroring the dimensions of the Elements door beneath, there is a strong sense of connection across the façade that can be hard to achieve when pursuing a unique style like Palms Springs.

Using tension to create harmony

This is a brilliant example of how to create a home that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. The layout includes expansive entertainment areas that hint at the effortless glamour of the 1960s Palm Springs era. A connection with the outdoors is also central to this classic style, and the home embraces that by using glass, timber, and an earthy palette to keep the interior feeling light, spacious, and connected to nature.

The Wattle Court team selected from our Manhattan Collection for internal doors, offering an industrial modern edge that both aligns with the mid-century influences and helps to define spaces without disrupting the home’s airy atmosphere.

Mid-century modern design elements are evident throughout, from the clean lines of the furniture and fixtures to the use of geometric shapes. The home’s playful colour palette (particularly the signature pink hues) brings a sense of whimsy that is synonymous with Palm Springs, while still maintaining a sophisticated appeal.

One of the most striking design elements is the use of the “lazy arch” concept, which the team say has been developed by Dani from The Make Haus. These soft round arches, echoed across doorways through to shower frames, create a gentle flow from one space to the next. We love how the juxtaposition between the rounded, softer curves of the lazy arch and the structured form of the Manhattan doors creates a tension that adds to the home’s overall design. Together, these seemingly contrasting design choices create a harmonious effect.

Seen something you like?

There’s an undeniable Australian twist to this classic Californian look. Native plants and earthy materials are seamlessly integrated, while the timber used for the front door and throughout the home brings so much warmth to the space. Every design decision feels thoughtful, resulting in a home that embraces Hollywood and adapts it to its new home down under.
