InspirationA perfect balance of quintessential beachside styles
There’s a reason so many of us love spending time by the coast. Whether you’re on a long, luxurious holiday, a weekend getaway, or a quick day trip, there’s nothing better than the peaceful feel of being beachside.
In their stunning Blue Lagoon home, our friends Kyal and Kara—who’ve project managed, designed, and completed over 35 renovation projects and regularly contributed to Network 10’s The Living Room—highlight how you can bring that blissful beachside feeling into the home. How? Through a seamless blend of Coastal and Mediterranean villa styles.
Let’s take a tour of the home and see how it all comes together.
A natural choice for a coastal-style oasis
Right from the entryway, Kyal and Kara’s Blue Lagoon home takes style cues from the natural environment. Kara elaborates:
“I think an Aussie Coastal home is all about designing a home that blends from the inside-out, and we’ve done that with lots of natural materials.”
“The entryway features the beautiful Blonde Oak AWO5 entrance door, and I love the grandeur. It’s painted in Taubmans Palm Frond which brings a nice green undertone. That’s our little nod to the palm trees and the national park we have in the distance.”
The entryway houses another beautiful reference to the natural world, in addition to organic stone textures and quintessential hardwood weatherboards.
Check out the handcrafted driftwood handle on the entrance door, which Kyal and his son made together after spotting it at a nearby local beach. It’s the perfect way to bring the coast home—quite literally—and embed treasured family memories right into the very first experience of arriving at Blue Lagoon.
A seamless blend of coastal-inspired styles
Both the Coastal and Mediterranean villa style are defined by a relaxed, natural feel with organic surfaces and textures. Kara describes some of the material choices made throughout the home:
“We have sandstone, blonde oak, and all these sandy colours in the benchtops [in the kitchen and living areas]. And then the Mediterranean style is about curves and arches, and the feeling that’s created through a rough, textured render.”
Choosing your interior doors is a big decision, and we chose some great ones that provide a little nod to those quintessential beach houses.

Nailing a cohesive interior aesthetic is all about the accumulative impact of individual design choices and finding understated ways to reiterate your style choice. Kara describes the approach at their Blue Lagoon home:
“Kyal and I have always loved the Moda Collection of doors. I love the versatility of its design (Moda Primed PMOD6) and for this home, it provides a little nod to those quintessential beach houses. [They also] provide this grand entrance into our master bedroom.”
“We used the Moda Primed Collectiondoors throughout and painted them in TaubmansTinseltown colour. It has a beautiful green undertone and works so well with the other sandy colours we’ve used throughout the home.”
