Behind the scenes at Brisbane’s Sesame House

Inspiration

For one couple, their journey of building a home was not just about achieving a specific design or getting it finished by a certain deadline. It was about bringing to life a feeling – the nostalgia and comfort that comes from many treasured memories together. Far flung travels full of unexpected discoveries, hidden laneways and the sweet scent of sesame cooking over a hot hibachi grill.

And so was born Sesame House, a stunning modern home with a nod to the Palm Springs style on the outside and a warm invitation to kick your feet up inside.

Seeking a subtle balance

Brisbane couple, Pamela and Jared, designed and built Sesame House through Tekna Homes in only six months. A stone’s throw from Moreton Bay, the home was built with a clear vision: to create a haven that seamlessly connects modern architectural styles and innovations with the beauty and tranquillity of surrounding natural elements.

For the young couple, the process of building was as important as the result. Every aspect of the home, from the layout to the materials chosen, was carefully considered to create a sense of calm and balance.

One of the biggest goals they had was ensuring every detail contributed to the overall aesthetic while also serving a practical purpose. This included the decision to incorporate doors that would not only enhance the look and feel of the home but would also provide security, privacy and – most importantly – joy.

What makes the perfect entrance?

From the very beginning, the two understood that the entrance of Sesame House would be a focal point, both in terms of design and functionality. After settling on a clear mood board and direction, they chose Corinthian Doors for its combination of bespoke craftsmanship, cutting-edge design and range of options.

“It was so helpful that we didn’t have to go to different places for everything we needed. It could all come in the one package.” says Jared.

Choosing a supplier that was going to deliver in terms of range and quality was very important to us.

Emphasising this sense of whimsy, style and scale, the couple chose the Elements ELEM A1 to also introduce the natural elements throughout the home’s interior. The door’s larger size matches the grandeur of the external façade and ensures the receded entry stands out as a focal point from the street.

With a stained finish that harmonises with the Godfrey Hirst floorboards, every element of the door was chosen to reflect the pair’s personal style, from opting for the ELEM H1B Round 300mm handle to selecting larger dimensions to fit snug with the entranceway frame.

Some simple advice to other home builders

“I’ve been in teaching my whole career,” says Pamela. “So, it was interesting to see how the smallest things can impact the effect you’re trying to achieve. All the working parts that go into a build, from power point placement to finishes – making sure everything is cohesive. You can focus on one room but achieving a unified design is the challenge.”

And key to that big-picture thinking is deciding on how designs should or shouldn’t fit together, Jared reflects.

“We were after a seamless experience across the home, having things that match across different spaces in some way. That’s just our preference. Others prefer to vary it up, which I think looks great as well. It’s just about knowing what you like.”

And do the owners of Sesame House still feel that sense of play and joy about their door many months later?

“Definitely. It doesn’t go away,” says Pamela.

You walk in at the end of each day, and you have that feeling every time. It's great that our guests are also able to experience that same feeling when they walk into our house
