How to buy Corinthian Doors
Your handy pre-purchase checklist
If you’re already living in your home and you are updating your doors:
If you already live in your home, and you’re looking for the perfect door (or doors) to refresh the look and feel of things—whether inside or out—here’s what you’ll need to do:
1. Choose the perfect door for the perfect place
Style is critical, but there are also technical and practical factors to consider. Check that your selection is perfect for your style vision, but also that it’s suited to the application you have in mind.
Things to confirm and consider include:
- Your existing door frame and hinge position if relevant.
- Your existing wall structure, particularly for sliding door additions.
- The size of the existing opening and whether your chosen door can be made to this size.
- How you would like your new door to operate (for example, whether you choose swing-hinged, cavity sliding units, barn door, or wardrobe doors).
- What sort of hardware you would like to go with.
If in doubt, we always recommend you check in with a carpenter or trade professional to confirm your ideal door is suitable for the space you’ve chosen. Pro tip: you’ll likely need a carpenter or tradesperson later on for installation anyway, so it might be good to get in early.
2. Make sure you measure
It’s important to confirm the size of your frame and check your favourite door comes in a size that suits those dimensions. You need to be 100% sure your door will fit to:
- Avoid gaps or tight fits: when your door fits perfectly in the existing frame, you’ll prevent gaps that can lead to drafts, or a door that’s too tight and difficult to open and close.
- Perfectly align with hinges and locks: an accurate measurement will ensure your new door aligns with other existing hardware that’s already in the frame if required, which prevents the need for adjustments or extra carpentry work.
- Enjoy smooth, easy operation: a correctly sized door will open and close smoothly without sticking, which is essential for every-day use and protecting long term durability.
If you have a door in the space that already fits well, you can measure the door itself. If you’re replacing a door because it could fit better, you’ll have to measure the opening within the frame, so calculate the space where your new door will fit. Please note: if you intend to get a carpenter to install your door, it’s best the carpenter generates these measurements themselves. If you have skills and experience in building, the best way to measure the space for your door is to:
- Measure the opening width, taking measurements at the top, middle, and bottom of your existing door to account for any irregularities.
- Measure the opening height, from the threshold (bottom of the door) to the top of the frame on both sides to ensure consistency.
- Measure the opening depth, checking the thickness of the door frame to ensure your new door matches.
- Measure the opening diagonally, from corner to corner, to check for squareness and ensure the frame is not out of alignment.
- When measuring, keep in mind that you’ll need approximately 3mm clearance from the top and sides of the door and 5mm for the bottom, above the floor covering or door frame sill.
Again, we strongly recommend you get the help of a carpenter or trade professional to assist with accurate measurement and installation. A professional makes the job easy, quick, and enjoyable: all you need to do is kick back and wait to enjoy the rejuvenated look and feel of your home!
3. Gather the details
Make sure you note the specific product name of your door, and not just the collection that your chosen door is from. For example, within the Moda Barn Collection of interior barn doors, you might have your heart set on the AWOBD4 product. It’s important to note that name: ‘AWOBD4’. This will make things easy and efficient when you’re ready to order.
If you’re tossing up between a few different doors—or you’re replacing multiple doors at once for a complete, cohesive update of your home—you should check out our My Doors tool. It’s an easy way to create and save lists of your favourite doors with all the details you’ll need, right where you need them.
4. Find your closest retailer
You can order and buy all our doors through local hardware retail stores. Some of our retail partners include Bowens, Bunnings Warehouse, Dahlsens, M&B, Mitre 10, and Natbuild.
We sell through different hardware retailers in each state and territory, but we’ve made it easy to find your nearest one. Check out our helpful tool to find the closest retailer to you.
5. Head in-store to order
We strongly recommend you go into the physical store of your closest retailer, rather than jumping on their website.
Some retailer websites only list certain products online, even if they actually sell a wider range through the store. You don’t want to miss out on the perfect match for your style vision! By heading in-store to a reseller, you can also chat about prices, lead times, and some resellers can even help with installation.
6. Contact a carpenter to help with installation
Once you’ve ordered your door from your local hardware retailer, you might benefit from contacting a carpenter to help with the installation. If you need help with painting or staining, some carpenters can help with that too. Alternatively, a painter and decorator should be able to bring your vision to life before or after your carpenter installs it for you, depending on preferred order.
